I was born in New York and lived most of my life in Miami, although my favorite place to live was Aruba, where I lived for 4 years as a child. I studied Mathematics Education at Florida International University and became a math teacher. I worked in the Miami-Dade Public School System, the fourth-largest school district in the nation, for 9 years – first at the middle school level then at the high school level. I became National Board Certified in Early Adolescence Mathematics and mastered my craft as an AP Calculus teacher before I decided I wanted to do something different.
So I sat for the LSAT and scored high enough to earn a full scholarship to Hofstra School of Law. I relocated with my family (husband + 3 kids) to Long Island, NY to attend law school. I passed the bar on my first try, and went to work at the Nassau County Legal Aid Society as a criminal defense attorney. I worked as a public defender for 4 years, and then transitioned into immigration law. After practicing immigration law at Manhattan Legal Services for 4 years, I became their first Deputy Director of Immigration. I’ve made it my life’s work to fight for the poor and disenfranchised, and I’m proud of all I have accomplished thus far.
When I first started this blog, I was worried about the next chapter of my life – as I had many items left to cross off my proverbial bucket list. Since then, I have moved back to Florida and bought my dream home in Sarasota with my best friend’s brother, who ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me! The man loves dogs as much as I do, and with him by my side I’m sure to realize my retirement fantasy of breeding German Shepherds and owning a baby goat!
